AWS European Sovereign Cloud: Skayink becomes a launch partner

Skaylink joins AWS as a launch partner to shape Europe’s sovereign cloud future.
June 17, 2025

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has officially announced that the AWS European Sovereign Cloud is set to launch by the end of 2025. As one of the first launch partners, Skaylink is confirming its leading role as a strategic partner for highly regulated industries, public sector organizations, and anyone seeking data sovereignty in the cloud.

€7.8 billion for a sovereign cloud infrastructure

With an investment of €7.8 billion by 2040, AWS is building a completely isolated cloud region – both physically and logically – in Brandenburg, Germany, operated exclusively by EU specialists. The first region is scheduled to launch at the end of 2025. It is specifically designed for organizations and public authorities with the highest requirements regarding data sovereignty, operational independence, and regulatory control.

This builds on AWS’s sovereign-by-design” approach and offers European customers a new level of independence, control, and transparency. All customer data and metadata will remain within the EU. Support and operational processes will be provided exclusively by EU-based personnel.

Skaylink as an AWS launch partner: putting sovereign cloud expertise into practice

AWS has now presented the governance model for the European Sovereign Cloud

  • An independent AWS company based in the EU and managed by EU citizens will operate the cloud independently from the existing global AWS network.
  • Kathrin Renz will serve as Managing Director of the AWS European Sovereign Cloud.
  • A dedicated security operations center in the EU and an independent advisory board will ensure data protection, access control, and regulatory transparency.
  • The cloud will operate independently from other AWS regions, both physically and logically – and will have its own network infrastructure, DNS (Route 53), and European certification authority.
