How AI is changing the modernization business case

One of AI’s most significant impacts on application modernization is economic: it can substantially reduce the effort required and accelerate delivery. Tasks that consume considerable engineering time – such as analyzing large code bases, identifying dependencies, documenting business logic, or upgrading versions – can increasingly be supported or automated by AI-powered tools and agents. 

Experienced architects and developers remain essential, but AI allows them to focus on higher-value decisions while automating repeatable modernization tasks. As a result, applications that were previously difficult to justify financially can become viable modernization candidates. 

The Skaylink modernization journey: From qualification to execution

Skaylink follows a structured process that helps customers move from uncertainty to a clear modernization roadmap. 

  • Qualify: Understand business goals, application readiness, modernization objectives, and the overall portfolio.  
  • Assess: Take a closer look at the technical and organizational context. This may include source code analysis, database mapping, architecture review, and a Modernization Viability Assessment for selected applications. 
  • Modernize: Transform applications, data, and analytics services according to business goals. This can be done, for example, by adopting cloud-native architectures, managed databases, containers, DevOps automation, or AI-enabled capabilities. 

What is an Application Modernization Assessment?

Our Application Modernization Assessment (AMA) is designed to answer a practical question: Which applications in the portfolio are the best candidates for modernization – and why? 

The assessment considers business context, technical readiness, modernization potential, and financial considerations. It examines what an application does, why it matters, who uses it, how critical it is, and what value modernization could deliver. 

The approach is cloud-agnostic and can be applied to any application portfolio, regardless of whether the customer uses AWS, another hyperscaler, or primarily operates on-premises. Skaylink is authorized by AWS as a partner to deliver Application Modernization Assessments and can help eligible customers take advantage of AWS funding throughout their modernization journey including assessment. This makes it possible to start with a structured, partner-led assessment, reduce upfront investment, and receive a clear business-oriented roadmap for modernization. 

A structured 3-phase approach

The assessment spans three phases over approximately 10 days:

The resulting deliverables include a portfolio view that shows which applications warrant further consideration and where modernization is most likely to deliver value. Applications are compared based on criteria such as ease of modernization, business criticality, cost saving potential, architecture and dependencies, infrastructure fit, and recommended modernization pathways. 

The assessment progressively narrows the scope to the most promising candidates while identifying applications for which modernization may not yet be justified.

For the most promising candidates, the next step is an in-depth Modernization Viability Assessment, which translates portfolio-level prioritization into a specific target architecture, project plan, and an executive-ready business case for an individual application.
